My Guitar Rig

November 3, 2009

My Guitar Rig

This is my guitar rig. It’s a little messy but it works well. I have a: Dunlop Cry Baby, Boss Noise Suppressor, Boss Line Selector, Behringer Acoustic Modeler AM100, ProCo Rat II, Blackstar HT Dual, Boss Blues Driver, Behringer Graphic Equaliser EQ700 Dunlop Dynacomp, EH Electric Mistress and a EH Memory Man. With this setup I can get some nice Floyd sound.

Chroma Key (in Final Cut Pro)

October 20, 2009

Chroma Keying is one of my favorite functions when it comes to shooting video. It does however make you lazy, as you can find yourself relying on just shooting in front of a green screen rather than searching for a suitable location.

I could spend hours (and have done) playing with different effects, both with the subject standing in front of the screen or with the back ground, changing it so that you place you subject in different locations.

I use Apple’s Final Cut, and this is what I do to ensure my Chroma Key looks good

1-   Add Colour Smoothing 4:1:1, Chroma Keyer and Spill Suppressor (Green/Blue depending on what background you are using).

2-   Turn off Colour Smoothing and spill suppressor (for the moment).

3-   Adjust the Chroma Keyer take out as much of the background as possible and use the slider functions (Thin Edge, Smoothing and Enhance) to fine tune the colour.

4-   When you are happy with the result use the Colour Smoothing 4:1:1 filter and just turn it on/off to see if it helps the overall output, if it doesn’t just leave it off.

5-   Finally use the Spill Suppressor to take out any green from the subjects face or features, and use the slider to adjust this.

You should now have a good looking Chroma effect.

Windows 7

October 14, 2009

It’s hard to think of a Windows operating system that didn’t suck, and if what I’ve heard and seen Windows 7 isn’t going to be any different.

Since Windows 95 they haven’t built a new operating system. They have just basically added stuff to this operating system and haven’t had any ideas of their own. They seem to be copying Apple’s.

For example:

-       Windows gadgets are Apple’s Widgets

-       Windows mail and calendar are a ‘rip off’ of Apples Mail and iCal

“If you can’t innovate, imitate.” Bertrand Serlet, Senior Vice President Software Engineering at Apple.

Although I have seen that Windows has copied Apple in other ways too. Firstly they have cut a lot of the crap out of their install so it installs quickly, Apple did this with Snow leopard.

Secondly, they have supposedly rewritten certain bits of code to make the os run smoother. Apple did this for Finder in Snow Leopard.

However I still don’t think Windows will succeed with Windows 7, as it is between £130- £160, depending on what version you get. Whereas, £25 for the worlds most advance operating system, Snow Leopard isn’t bad.

Windows 7 already a Winner

Guitar Hero: Pink Floyd?

October 9, 2009

I love playing guitar hero, and the idea of the special guitar hero versions (Aerosmith, Metallica and for Rock Band, The Beatles and ACDC), this gives the player a better playing experience if they think they are playing as Angus Young, for instance.

The thought of standing on stage, millions of fans screaming, then you start playing Thunderstruck. Classic. However my favourite band is Pink Floyd, and with the musical genius of Gilmour, Waters, Wright , Mason and the legend Syd Barret the Guitar Hero franchise would be missing something big.

Floyd have come up with a series of the worlds most influential songs / guitar solos, so given the nature of the game it would seem reasonable that we would see such a game.

Imagine, inviting your friends round, or even on xbox live, playing a set which include: time, money, breathe, wish you were here, have a cigar, run like hell and 20 min of echoes. Or better yet playing the entire wall album from start to finish. To be honest they would need to make two games to fit all the great music in.

Pink Floyd hasn’t ruled out participating in Rockband or Guitar Hero
